Danaja Antonija Volk and Countercult

Danaja’s Countercult work sits at the meeting point of cultural curation, community, technology, and the practical conditions that let creative scenes continue.

A public record of Danaja’s involvement with Countercult, assembled from her public professional profile, Countercult’s public page, and named Countercult writing.

2023: programme and community work

Danaja’s public professional profile places her in Berlin’s cultural and programme ecosystem before her Countercult role, including work with WISE and THF Radio. That context helps explain the kind of contribution she brought to Countercult: relationships, programming, outreach, and an understanding of how cultural communities organise in practice.

2024: co-founding Countercult

The same public profile records Danaja joining Countercult in February 2024 as co-founder, with responsibilities including network expansion, grant applications, outreach, public relations, and business development. Countercult’s public page describes her as a cultural curator working across culture, community, and technology.

This was not a symbolic title. It was the connective work required to turn an idea for a cultural platform into a network with partners, programmes, and a reason for people to take part.

2025: writing the policy case

In December 2025, Danaja wrote Basic Income for Artists Is Not Radical. It Is Rational. for Countercult’s Cult Chronicles. The essay made the case that direct support for artists is cultural infrastructure, not charity, and brought evidence into a conversation that is often left at the level of sentiment.

Her authorship shows another part of the role: Countercult’s public voice was shaped by people who understand both the lived conditions of creative work and the systems around it.

2025 to 2026: pilots, curation, and cultural strategy

Danaja is also credited on Countercult’s public case studies about the Rural Hackers and Anceu archive, Most Wanted Music, and Zalando Pride in Berlin. These projects show her work alongside other contributors, not as a solo operator: helping frame the cultural question, understand the context, and make the resulting work legible.

Countercult’s public residency writing also identifies Danaja as a curator for the Späti Residency, connecting her wider work with artists, community media, and sustainable creative careers to the platform’s exchange and programme layer.

“How are creatives actually making it? No fluff, no gatekeeping, just real stories from working artists.”

Danaja’s guiding question for the Späti Residency podcast, quoted from Countercult’s public Substack post “A residency, a party, and maybe a paycheck”.

That question captures the contribution: making the network more human, more useful, and more connected to the realities of creative work.
