Bring Countercult into the brief before business and technology meet the real world
Countercult Studios connects business and technology to real people and places. We work before, alongside, or behind agency teams when a brief needs local context, useful relationships, digital and physical delivery, or a grounded route into a market.

Where Countercult fits
Before the brief
Connect the commercial or product question to the people, relationships, and conditions shaping a market or place. Pressure-test assumptions while the proposition can still change.
Alongside the agency
Join business and technology thinking with research, partner curation, creative direction, digital and physical experience design, and production planning.
Behind the agency
Provide scoped research, cultural and market context, production intelligence, and delivery support under agreed confidentiality and credit terms.
The proof point: Rural Hackers, Anceu
The clearest evidence is Countercult’s work with Rural Hackers, Anceu Coliving, and the Pontevedra WordPress community in Galicia. Invited through a youth-exchange context, Countercult tested its open-source platform as a region-wide case study, starting with Anceu’s 97-person village. The local partners want the team back later in 2026 to continue the work. Countercult has also received funding from the Spanish government.
This is the kind of brief Countercult is built for: a real place, a living cultural question, a local partner network, and a first phase that can become a stronger case for continuation. Read the full Rural Hackers pilot note →

Four ways to engage Countercult
- Cultural read: a focused research and risk sprint before strategy or pitch development.
- Partner map: a context-led view of relevant artists, spaces, organizations, and local relationships-not a cold contact list.
- Strategy and concept: cultural intelligence translated into the narrative, experience, partnership model, and measures of local value.
- Delivery support: practical collaboration through briefing, commissioning, production, documentation, and post-project learning.
A client-ready description
Countercult Studios connects business and technology to real people and places through agency partnerships and direct client work.
Use that language in a pitch or credentials document, then show the specific business question, technology, local context, and delivery role in the brief. Countercult is most useful before the important decisions have been fixed.

What responsible partnership means
Countercult does not sell guaranteed access to communities, verify that a campaign is culturally safe, or promise a particular outcome. Local participation should be relevant, informed, and paid. Sensitive places and cultures may need limited visibility rather than wider exposure. The goal is not to borrow credibility; it is to build work that leaves more value, context, and capacity with the people involved.
Common agency questions
When should we bring Countercult in?
As early as possible-ideally while the brief, partner model, cultural geography, and measures of success can still change.
Can Countercult work invisibly behind our agency?
Yes. Countercult can be client-facing, jointly credited, or behind the scenes. The role, confidentiality, ownership, and credits should be agreed at the beginning.
Can you find artists and spaces for a campaign?
Countercult can research and curate appropriate potential partners, but it does not treat the network as a talent database or guarantee participation. Every collaboration depends on fit, consent, availability, scope, and fair compensation.
Where can you work?
Berlin and New York are initial hubs, with wider work across the United States, Europe, rural places, and international cultural contexts where an appropriate local partnership can be built.
Bring the question before the solution is fixed.

Countercult Studios is led by Shona Neary and works across cultural strategy, cultural intelligence, archiving, place development, creative direction, curation, audience testing, and real-world activation.
This piece was informed by Shona Neary’s writing, conversations, and thinking around independent culture, artists, and place.
editorial process: Our Journals are pulled from our writings over the years to get information out as quickly and as widely as possible, and to get to what matters: finding each other and claiming our seat in the circular economy. Some ideas overlap between Shona Neary's work on cultural infrastructure and their artist practice as Sketchy Shona. AI is a tool for infrastructure, not for creating Journal writing or artists' work. We welcome original reporting and pitches from journalists and independent publishers.
