Culture tech should help value reach the people who create culture

The problem is not a lack of cultural content
Independent artists and spaces already produce the ideas, images, gatherings, scenes, and places that make culture move. The problem is that they are difficult to discover responsibly, funding rarely reaches them through ordinary economic activity, and organisations often approach a place without the relationships needed to work there well.
More scraping, ranking, and content generation does not solve that. It can make culture easier to consume while leaving the people behind it harder to support.
Countercult connects three jobs
- Find independent culture. A curated public map makes artists, spaces, collectives, and scenes easier to discover without publishing private member information.
- Fund independent culture. The Countercult Fund gives businesses a way to build a marketing budget from selected sales. The business keeps the reserve and pays local creative workers directly; Countercult recommends a commission and can support the brief, matching, and delivery.

Why artist-founded matters
Countercult is built from inside the problem. Shona developed the platform while working across art, curation, design, technology, business development, artist-led space, and cultural production. That does not make every decision automatically correct. It means the infrastructure begins with lived knowledge of the people it is intended to serve.
The network is curated rather than scraped. Public discovery is separated from private member information. Payment does not buy cultural approval. Artists are not treated as a decorative layer added after the commercial idea is complete.
A different culture-tech category
Countercult is not an artist-booking marketplace, an AI content studio, or a generic directory. It is a connected public and commercial layer through which independent culture can be found, supported, and brought into paid work while retaining context and trust.
The technology is useful when it strengthens the relationship, not when it replaces the people.
