Independent culture needs infrastructure, not only projects
Countercult is building a public, artist-founded layer through which independent culture can be found, funded, and brought into paid relationships.
What needs support
Independent culture is often funded one exhibition, event, commission, or residency at a time. Those projects matter, but the shared infrastructure around them remains fragile: discovery, trusted introductions, documentation, accessible opportunities, artist exchange, and the ability for small spaces to remain visible.
Countercult keeps a curated public map open while protecting private member information. It connects artists, spaces, cultural workers, businesses, and places. It also tests practical funding routes such as the Countercult Fund, where businesses add money to ordinary sales and Countercult turns the growing budget into paid local creative work.
Why commercial work cannot fund everything
Countercult Studios provides paid research, curation, creative direction, and production for organisations. That work can finance part of the platform, but a public cultural network should not depend permanently on one artist-founder selling and delivering bespoke services.
Philanthropic support can protect the parts that should remain public and accessible: free artist and independent-space discovery, careful curation, cultural documentation, early programme testing, and participation by people who cannot pay.
What support could enable
- Keep artist and independent-space profiles publicly discoverable without pay-to-rank visibility.
- Develop dense, locally accountable networks with credible partners in specific places.
- Review paid opportunities and protect artists from extractive briefs.
- Document artist-run spaces, cultural practices, and knowledge that are easy to overlook or lose.
- Test exchange, housing, residency, and funding mechanisms before forcing them into a commercial model.
- Measure how much paid work and business-funded support reaches independent creatives.
What Countercult is not asking funders to buy
Support should not purchase control over curation, member approval, editorial conclusions, or organic ranking. Countercult is looking for partners who understand that cultural trust is part of the infrastructure, not a branding surface to be acquired.
