Human Cocoon began as a drawing and became an installation for a body, shown within DA SWAMP at The Floor in Berlin.
The first form was a drawing
Human Cocoon began with a drawing of a body folded inside a porous silver form. The concept image records the first form of the idea, rather than a flash drawing or separate study.
The finished structure gives that drawing weight and scale. Its openings decide what the body can see and what can see it. The form is not only a shell around a person. It changes the relation between the person, the room and the viewer.
A body completes the image
The photographs record the installation at the scale it was meant to occupy: a seated body inside a larger structure, with the room visible around it. The light catches the surface while the openings keep the outside world present.
This is not an object documented in a neutral space. The body, the form, the light and the room are the work together. The photographic record gives the archive three connected views: the concept, the built structure and the person inside it.
Sculptural installation within DA SWAMP
Human Cocoon was an installation within DA SWAMP, the 48 Stunden Neukölln exhibition at The Floor in Berlin. The exhibition brought together my drawings, objects, tattoos and live work in one temporary room.
The archive keeps the sequence intact: concept sketch, built form, photographic record and the people who entered it. That sequence matters to the wider practice because an image can become an object, an object can shape a room, and a room can hold an encounter.
