From Sketchy Shona to Countercult Studios
Shona Neary’s art practice and Studio practice are two expressions of the same attention: people, place, material, and the conditions that let culture move.
The artist identity
Sketchy Shona is the name used for Shona’s fine art, murals, installations, mixed-media work, and tattoo practice. It is a working artist identity, not a marketing character. The work asks what it means to be human in a changing world and moves between studio, public, and site-responsive contexts.
The Studio identity
Countercult Studios is the client-facing practice: creative direction, cultural strategy, production, curation, audience testing, and experiential work. Shona leads that work and is the contact for brands, tourism organizations, governments, institutions, and VC-backed companies that need to understand a cultural context before entering it.
Why the combination matters
Commercial strategy benefits from proximity to real creative practice. Art benefits from a stronger cultural and economic infrastructure around it. The connection is useful when it remains honest: no promise of guaranteed outcomes, no claim to speak for a scene, and no separation between the people shaping culture and the people being asked to fund it.

editorial process: Our Journals are pulled from our writings over the years to get information out as quickly and as widely as possible, and to get to what matters: finding each other and claiming our seat in the circular economy. Some ideas overlap between Shona Neary's work on cultural infrastructure and their artist practice as Sketchy Shona. AI is a tool for infrastructure, not for creating Journal writing or artists' work. We welcome original reporting and pitches from journalists and independent publishers.
