How the Countercult Fund Works, From Sale to Commission.

A culture-euro amount added to a chosen product grows a marketing budget with every sale. Countercult brings local curation, production, and delivery to turn it into paid creative work.

By Shona Neary, artist, founder, and cultural strategist.

The Countercult Fund is easiest to understand when the whole flow is visible. A culture euro is added to a chosen product; each sale builds a budget for marketing or an experience the business needs. Countercult's artist-run team brings the trust, local curation, and production experience to turn that growing budget into paid creative work.

1. Select the commercial activity

A business chooses a product to carry the culture euro. It might be an item from a menu, a ticket, a room night, a membership, or another product it already sells. Linking the amount to a familiar sale makes the idea simple to explain and gives the growing budget a clear source.

2. Agree the culture euro per sale

The business and Countercult agree an amount to add to each sale of the chosen product. It is not a large marketing budget required up front: the Fund grows as customers buy. The amount should fit the product, the business, and the kind of work the resulting budget is intended to support.

Before anything launches, Countercult and the business agree how sales and contributions will be recorded. That arrangement is part of building a trustworthy brief, not an automated feature we promise. Financial and payment services such as banking or payment processing are not what Countercult currently provides.

3. Accumulate toward a useful benchmark

A contribution becomes useful as it accumulates toward a real brief. Rather than promise an activation after every sale, Countercult and the business plan for the level of work the growing marketing budget can support: perhaps a live set, workshop, photo commission, writing, local research, or another defined experience.

That makes the culture euro more than a vague pledge. The business understands how product sales build toward work it can use, and Countercult helps set a realistic scope as the budget grows. A smaller brief can start sooner; a larger one may need more sales first.

4. Turn the budget into a brief

As the budget builds, Countercult works with the business to shape a brief around a genuine marketing or experience need. We consider what the business wants to achieve, what the local context calls for, and what creative work can make that useful.

The business does not have to source artists, negotiate the production, or manage another project on top of everything else. Countercult brings context, curation, trusted relationships, clear terms, and practical experience to make the commission achievable.

5. Match and manage paid work

Countercult draws on its public network and local relationships to curate the right artists, photographers, writers, DJs, producers, workshop leaders, cultural spaces, and other creative workers. The match is based on the brief, the people, and the local context.

Our team handles the logistics around paid work: artist coordination, production, scheduling, access, and delivery. Each brief has a defined scope, agreed terms, and someone with the experience to carry it through.

6. Keep evidence of what happened

A trustworthy process keeps a proportionate record of the agreed contribution method, the work commissioned, the people paid, the place involved, and the outcomes that can responsibly be shared. The record helps the business understand how sales supported its marketing and local creative work, and helps Countercult improve the next commission.

The Fund connects a commercial input to curation, a paid brief, and work delivered. It is not a bank, an automated checkout tool, or a payment processor today. It is a practical way to help business activity create repeat commissions and keep more value circulating through the local cultural economy.
