Culture Is Local Knowledge, Not a Content Category
Culture is shared knowledge, relationships, memory, practice and work. A local network should make it easier to find without treating every context as public data.
Culture is often treated as a sector, an event, or a content category. Those labels can help organise a programme or a budget, but they can also make the living system harder to see. Culture includes the knowledge, behaviour and practices people learn from one another and carry forward.
Culture moves between people
Research on cumulative cultural evolution describes how socially learned practices can change and build over time. In a place, that transmission sits across artists, venues, businesses, workers, schools, associations, families and informal relationships. A map or directory can make part of this visible. It is not the whole system.
Local knowledge has boundaries
Some cultural information belongs in public discovery. Some belongs to members, collaborators or the people who hold a relationship. A public profile can help someone understand what a person or place does and how to make a respectful approach. It should not expose private contact details, unpublished terms or sensitive community knowledge simply because a platform can store them.
Visibility is not the same as participation
Making a local practice visible does not automatically bring work or value back to the people creating it. The route from finding culture to supporting it may involve a commission, a purchase, a local partnership, a paid brief, an invitation or a public investment. The next step has to be clear enough for a real person to take it.
Infrastructure changes the relationship
Countercult is building a public discovery layer alongside protected member and relationship data. The purpose is to make existing cultural knowledge easier to find, while keeping the difference between a public record, a private relationship and a paid brief intact. Studios and the Fund are part of the route from discovery into paid cultural work. We are building that system; we are not claiming that every part is finished.
A working definition
Culture is locally held and socially learned knowledge, practice and meaning that people adapt and pass on. It belongs to the people who make and maintain it. The useful question is not only how to publish a record, but how to keep its context, consent and value attached as it moves.
