Major institutional events like Berlin Art Week and NYFW have become corporate, gatekept rooms of monotony and safety in most cases. It’s more about what sells (we get it, times are tough!) but in turn, the actual connection to people is being lost. The cost of entry prices out the real, actual underground community that the world hopes to connect with, forcing independent creators out of the very spaces they built. Because we refuse to wait for institutional permission or funding, independent artists just doing it all ourselves: building alternative, decentralized peer-to-peer survival networks like the one we just launched below.

We had to get into it basically against our will, but we can’t watch another spot shut down and more artists being pushed out. But does that mean we’re helpless? Yes. But not in numbers.
Sho, our founder, (also me writing in third person lol) has been on a manic creative high. In two weeks with 14-hour days developing and researching, I have made us this solution: yes, our curated platform that is free—and you should definitely sign up—has a pooling our resources exchange board.
That means we are starting to post our:
- 🛏 Free rooms to rent, for swapping with one of our other artists in another country.
- 🏢 Businesses listing free spaces for artists.
- 💼 And obviously, the good old skill swap and job opportunities.

💸 Global Income Squeeze: Comprehensive global studies show a staggering 85% of independent artists survive on less than $25,000 per year, forcing spaces to shrink worldwide just to keep up with overhead. Commercial powerhouses like Pace Gallery are cutting massive rosters of staff and artists.
🇩🇪 Berlin Club Collapse: The latest Clubkultur Berlin 2026 Study by the Clubcommission Berlin notes that 61% of Berlin’s clubs are barely breaking even, and 23% are considering shutting down entirely within the next 12 months. Iconic spots like Watergate, SchwuZ, and kwia have already closed or faced bankruptcy. This structural precarity matches findings from the comprehensive bbk berlin ‘Precarious Capital, Creative Existences’ report on visual creators.

Our launch event isn’t just a party: Klunkerkranich is actively a part of our Countercult Fund case study (more on that in another post). We aren’t just complaining about infrastructure; we are analyzing how independent physical venues can co-exist, share resources, and provide spatial equity back to local creators without relying on top-down gentrification models.
And since we’re really serious about this working, we are having a party/IRL networking session in Berlin at the semi-underground Klunkerkranich in collaboration with the Berlin Pulse network as well.
